even before the client arrives at the airport.&amp;nbsp; This strategy ensures that any problems which may arise during flight will be identified on the ground instead of in the air.&amp;nbsp; In addition, private aircraft have higher safety requirements than commercial, such as tire change frequencies, wing bolts changes, number of hours for engine overhaul, etc...&amp;nbsp; It’s not practical for commercial aircraft to be taken out of commission for overhaul, inspections, and tests in proportion to that of private aircraft.&amp;nbsp; Commercial aircraft are run all day long, like a taxi.&amp;nbsp; It’s just the nature of the beast.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Next we have the obvious social safety issue which is flying with strangers.&amp;nbsp; When flying commercial, you don’t know who the other passengers are, other than associates or family on board with you.&amp;nbsp; This can be an issue in the world of terrorism or just the fear of terrorism.&amp;nbsp; When flying privately, you get to choose who flies with you.&amp;nbsp; That’s obvious, but a valid safety point.&amp;nbsp; Now that Bin Laden is dead, it’s logical that more flyers are on pins and needles when it comes to traveling commercial.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Here’s another factor for considering safety—the size of the aircraft.&amp;nbsp; supersonic passenger aircraft to replace the Concorde?&amp;nbsp; Not me—but here we are waiting on a supersonic business jet (SSBJ) to enter the market.&amp;nbsp; It seems Boeing had a compelling design for a large, 200 passenger supersonic aircraft at one time; but that one was never realized.&amp;nbsp; Here’s a pic of that design (image left).&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The front part of the aircraft needs some artistic finesse, but the overall look of the delta design is spot on.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;I’m willing to guess the issue of the sonic boom is the sour note that persuades manufacturers to shy away from producing these niche-market aircraft; especially since most private travel occurs over land where sonic booms are taboo!&amp;nbsp; This makes it impractical to exceed Mach 1.0 which, in turn defeats the purpose of a SSBJ.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; Get rid of the sonic boom problem so one can fly over land at speeds greater than Mach 1.0.&amp;nbsp; It seems the Aerion Corporation, out of Reno, NV has solved that problem with an aircraft design that has a “no boom” speed of Mach 1.2 (image right).&amp;nbsp; Just to give you an idea, the average private aircraft travels at Mach 0.80, which is about 528 mph, whereas Aerion’s Mach 1.2 aircraft travels at a zippy 792 mph.&amp;nbsp; This is a 33% increase in speed.&amp;nbsp; That sounds pretty good, but wait…the Concorde traveled at Mach 2.0 in 1965!&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Hmmm, and it’s 2011 now and the Aerion’s SSBJ will not be ready until 2016.&amp;nbsp; So, in 50 years of aviation advancement the next supersonic aircraft to reach the market is 330 mph slower?&amp;nbsp; I’m a bit disappointed, but I can also safely assume the max speed of Aerion jet, which is Mach 1.6 (1,056 mph) over water, is due to the high costs involved to make the aircraft go faster.&amp;nbsp; Of course faster “can” be achieved, but it seems at $80 mil each, the folks at Aerion had to keep the price point appealing to prospective customers.&amp;nbsp; And thus, a compromise in speed for lower costs.&amp;nbsp; Ok, fine I can accept this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;What excites me about Aerion’s SSBJ more than merely speedy private jet travel for business executives is the air ambulance market.&amp;nbsp; Imagine being able to transport a very ill person at Mach 1.2 from one hospital to another at 792 mph over land.&amp;nbsp; That could save their life.&amp;nbsp; How about transporting organs to someone in a life-threatening situation?&amp;nbsp; Well, a cabin pressure of 11.77 psi is the equivalent to a 6,000 ft altitude.
