Today’s in-flight movie is “Snakes on a Plane”. How many airlines offer this movie to their passengers? Well . . . none . . . but when flying privately you can have a little fun with your friends or co-workers who fly with you.

Seriously though, have you ever tried to book a commercial flight for several employees at the last minute? If so, you’d probably rather have a load of snakes on your plane instead rather than deal with the stress of coordination. Not only are last minute flights expensive, a hassle to coordinate and manage, and risky that some of your employees could get bumped, but if you do the math, booking a group of eight with first class seating on short notice is only about 15-20% more than flying privately, yet the benefits outweigh the higher cost. Consider the jet lag experienced by flying on commercial aircraft to private jets, the long wait times at the airports, hotels for everyone, layovers, lost luggage, etc… and how does that affect your business, employee morale, and their performance? Maybe you’ll get lucky and there’s no problem, or maybe not.

Just for fun, let’s design a trip to see how the numbers work out.
Your company is in New York City and your new (hopeful) client in Los Angeles, California calls and wants to meet early next week in regards to a big contract. You want your best team of eight to meet with that client in Los Angeles for a single day meeting. Flying commercially, this is a two day and one night (minimum) commercial flight going from New York to Los Angeles. Eight, 1st class tickets average $6,000 per person when booked within three days from the trip. (I just verified this price on a commercial airline ticket website today) That’s $48,000 in tickets. Let’s estimate the average salary per hr for these employees to be $50 x 8 people. Factor in four hrs early airport arrival (2 hrs for departure and 2 hrs for the return trip). That’s $1,600 in wasted productive time. A hotel room per night is $190 avg x 8 is $1,520. Factor in the salaries spent for these employees to be away from the office for two days compared to a one day trip flying privately. That’s an extra $3,200 in wasted productive time not to mention time away from their families. Your company should pay for the employee’s food too, so we’ll factor in the cost for food on the second day which is about $800. So, the grand total here is $55,120 for this trip on commercial aircraft. That doesn’t include the cost for someone to coordinate and manage all the travel plans. That grueling task probably falls on the Exec Assistant. What’s It Like To Be A Charter Sales Rep?

If you’re curious to know what makes Dynasty Jets tick, then you may find this particular article interesting.

Being a Charter Sales Representative in the private jet charter business is not like any other sales experience in the world. The Charter Rep is not selling the actual aircraft, but only the use of it. The Rep is selling trust, and maybe the words “selling trust” are a misnomer in this context; better put, the Rep is developing trust with prospective customers in order to complete the sale. These relationships take time to develop—a lot of time. So, a Rep needs to be patient and savvy, and maybe a little creative. The end result of all that effort is a customer who says, “Yes, I choose to fly with you.” Why do customers lean toward popular brokers even if their prices are higher? Trust…bottom line. The positive reputation of a broker is sometimes all the trust a customer needs to take their first flight. Sometimes it’s just word of mouth from a friend or associate that imparts the sense of trust to a new customer. But, in order to avoid a revolving door business, a Rep must still cultivate that relationship over time and through unavoidable trials. Private Jet Safety vs Commercial

We’ve all heard the statistics that flying is safer than traveling by car. But what about traveling commercial aircraft versus private aircraft? Is there a difference in safety? I say Yes! As a broker of private jet charters and an agent for aircraft sales, Dynasty Jets considers safety its #1 priority over anything else. There are many private aircraft operators for brokers to choose from, but Dynasty Jets selects operators that adhere to only the top safety procedures and meet all safety criteria by law. You may ask, “Well don’t all private jet operators do this?” Unfortunately, No—and if they’re caught then it’s a big ugly fine from the FAA or even suspension of their Part 135 certificate. In addition, Dynasty Jets does not charter aircraft older than 1995, with the exception of some cargo aircraft like the Antonov. When people choose to invest a lot of money on a private jet flight, they are not only buying luxury, efficiency, and convenience, but safety too. When customers choose a broker, like Dynasty Jets, they are putting complete trust in that company with theirs, their families, and their employees’ lives. Dynasty Jets takes trust very seriously and firmly believes their clients’ decision to fly with them is based more on trust than saving a little money. When comparing private aircraft safety to commercial, the private aircraft is prepared just for that client’s flight as the engines are run for a long time and all instruments are tested over and over; even before the client arrives at the airport. This strategy ensures that any problems which may arise during flight will be identified on the ground instead of in the air. In addition, private aircraft have higher safety requirements than commercial, such as tire change frequencies, wing bolts changes, number of hours for engine overhaul, etc... It’s not practical for commercial aircraft to be taken out of commission for overhaul, inspections, and tests in proportion to that of private aircraft. Commercial aircraft are run all day long, like a taxi. It’s just the nature of the beast.

Next we have the obvious social safety issue which is flying with strangers. When flying commercial, you don’t know who the other passengers are, other than associates or family on board with you. This can be an issue in the world of terrorism or just the fear of terrorism. When flying privately, you get to choose who flies with you. That’s obvious, but a valid safety point. Now that Bin Laden is dead, it’s logical that more flyers are on pins and needles when it comes to traveling commercial.

Here’s another factor for considering safety—the size of the aircraft. Smaller (private) aircraft can land at more airports and commercial ones cannot. In the event of a technical or mechanical problem during flight, a commercial aircraft will have about 30% fewer choices for emergency landing locations than a light, mid, or heavy private aircraft. That may not seem like a big deal now, but when the plane is descending fast due to a loss of power, it would be nice to have the option to land at a smaller municipal airport.

Yes, I realize this blog is about yachts and not jets, but truthfully those who fly privately and who like jets typically appreciate sailing and power yachts as well. Buying a Jet - 101

Buying a jet is an important decision—that’s obvious, but it’s even more paramount than some might realize. A jet is a sophisticated machine, a tool to grow your business, a depreciating asset, and considering the fact that the owner, employees, clients, and possibly their families will be whisking 51,000 ft though the air at 500+ mph, it becomes a matter of personal safety too. When one buys or builds a home, there are most definitely pitfalls and extraneous costs of which a great real estate agent will identify and help the buyer overcome. Considering vehicles like quality cars or heavy equipment, buying new is easy(er), but buying pre-owned requires an expert to filter the bad from the good. Boeing BBJs… Works of Art

Boeing BBJ interior - Amazing!

Just one look at these five-star hotels in the sky and I’m ready to move in! I have a friend who flies about 200 days per year in his Falcon 7X. I’ve been working on convincing him to buy a BBJ or something similar, but he’s an artist at heart and doesn’t really like the outer design of the BBJ. I must agree with him in principle; the BBJ could you some redesigning of the outer shape. But, as you can see from these amazing photos, the interior is...well...quite amazing.

I have a heart for children, and when I see beautiful aircraft like the BBJ, I think, “Wow, wouldn’t it be wonderful to take terminally-ill children on a “make a wish” trip in one of these flying works of art?” I certainly think so. It’s one of my personal ambitions to own one or more aircraft dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of less-fortunate children. A trip to Disney Land on a BBJ for a terminally-ill child with his/her family would be a one-of-a-kind experience for sure.

The Supersonic Private Jet

Who would have thought that since the mid 1960’s there would not have been at least one supersonic passenger aircraft to replace the Concorde? Not me—but here we are waiting on a supersonic business jet (SSBJ) to enter the market. It seems Boeing had a compelling design for a large, 200 passenger supersonic aircraft at one time; but that one was never realized. Here’s a pic of that design (image left). The front part of the aircraft needs some artistic finesse, but the overall look of the delta design is spot on.

I’m willing to guess the issue of the sonic boom is the sour note that persuades manufacturers to shy away from producing these niche-market aircraft; especially since most private travel occurs over land where sonic booms are taboo! This makes it impractical to exceed Mach 1.0 which, in turn defeats the purpose of a SSBJ.

Aerion SSBJ

What to do?... Get rid of the sonic boom problem so one can fly over land at speeds greater than Mach 1.0. It seems the Aerion Corporation, out of Reno, NV has solved that problem with an aircraft design that has a “no boom” speed of Mach 1.2 (image right). Just to give you an idea, the average private aircraft travels at Mach 0.80, which is about 528 mph, whereas Aerion’s Mach 1.2 aircraft travels at a zippy 792 mph. This is a 33% increase in speed. That sounds pretty good, but wait…the Concorde traveled at Mach 2.0 in 1965! Hmmm, and it’s 2011 now and the Aerion’s SSBJ will not be ready until 2016. So, in 50 years of aviation advancement the next supersonic aircraft to reach the market is 330 mph slower? I’m a bit disappointed, but I can also safely assume the max speed of Aerion jet, which is Mach 1.6 (1,056 mph) over water, is due to the high costs involved to make the aircraft go faster. Of course faster “can” be achieved, but it seems at $80 mil each, the folks at Aerion had to keep the price point appealing to prospective customers. And thus, a compromise in speed for lower costs. Ok, fine I can accept this.

What excites me about Aerion’s SSBJ more than merely speedy private jet travel for business executives is the air ambulance market. Imagine being able to transport a very ill person at Mach 1.2 from one hospital to another at 792 mph over land. That could save their life. How about transporting organs to someone in a life-threatening situation? I see value in this hands down, and for this reason alone I am all for SSBJs.

The New 747-8

Large aircraft are very cool—and that about sums it up for me. The complex engineering amazes me yet the lines and shapes are simple (artistic); not to mention the vision and drive it takes to produce these flying fortresses.

If you want to buy one, it’s about an 18-24 month production time once the order is placed. That seems like a long time to wait, sort of like being on a waiting list to buy a Harley about 10 years ago. But, these things are brand spakin’ new. In fact I was talking with Boeing on the phone about three weeks ago and they said the first one will be delivered to its owner this June (ish).

Did You Know… the Falcon 7X has a cabin pressure of 11.77 psi?

So what does that mean for me and my flight, you may ask. Well, a cabin pressure of 11.77 psi is the equivalent to a 6,000 ft altitude. This means no jet lag. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Falcon 7X has one of the highest cabin pressures. That makes it a great choice when flying long distances and especially good when traveling frequently.

My friend owns a 7X and he told me the other day that every time he has flown long distances there has been no sign of fatigue whatsoever.

I am always researching aircraft, so I wanted to pass along some useful information to those who may be wondering what aircraft might be best for that long trip. I realize that cabin pressure is just one small part of the decision, but it's something to consider.
